Toyota Motor Corporation announced on May 20 that global sales of hybrid vehicles surpassed the 9-million-unit mark as of April 30. The fact that it only took the car manufacturer nine months to hit this number is quite an accomplishment and stands as a badge of honor for a brand committed to decreasing the environmental effects of automobiles.

It’s no secret that Toyota has encouraged the mass-market adoption of hybrid vehicles across the world. As of April 2016, Toyota currently sells 33 hybrid passenger car models and one plug-in hybrid model in a whopping 90 countries. Part of Toyota’s commitment to eco-friendly automobiles includes the Toyota Environmental Challenge 2050, an ideal to reduce the negative impacts vehicles have on global environmental health to as close to zero as possible. Toyota is working to increase its hybrid lineup in order to attain this goal and has hefty sales goals in mind.

Estimates from Toyota claim that hybrid vehicles have saved close to 25 million kiloliters of gasoline compared to the amount used by gasoline-powered vehicles. This equates to about 67 million fewer tons of CO2 emissions, the leading cause of global warming. Hybrid vehicles bearing the Toyota name are well-loved and supported by consumers around the globe and have been since the original hybrid vehicles were introduced in 1997.

Toyota plans to forge ahead in the hybrid car segment by continuing its work to enhance performance, reduce costs, and expand its product lineup. Look for Toyota to be at the forefront of twenty-first century environmental technologies
