Take It Easy

For a nice, relaxing hike, head to the Volcanoes Trail. It’s a 2.9-mile loop with only 288 feet in elevation gain. You’ll enjoy hiking through the Petroglyph National Monument while taking in views of wild flowers, Albuquerque, the Rio Grande Valley, and the Sandia Mountains. Mountain biking and horseback riding are welcome, in addition to your furry friend if he’s on leash. If you want to bring the kiddos along, the hike is easy enough and has benches sporadically for resting.

Take It Up a Notch

If you’re ready to take on a moderate hike, we recommend trying out the Piedra Lisa Canyon Trail that’s located in the Sandia Foothills Open Space Park. The out and back hike is 1.9 miles and has an elevation gain of 941 feet. Although the trail is dog friendly—if your pet is on-leash—it may be a little rough for pups who aren’t big rock climbers.

Hurry, because this hike is recommended for use from March through October.

The Domingo Baca Trail is a lightly trafficked trail that’s about 7.9 miles out and back. You’ll start out in the open desert and progress into greenery and streams within the Sandia Mountains. Other views include a river and a wreckage from a flight that crashed in 1955. More good news—this trail is dog-friendly as long as they’re on leash.
