In 2015, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tested 102 new vehicle models from differnet brands sold in the U.S. for LATCH ease-of-use.
LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) systems are meant to make installing child safety seats easier and mistake-free for parents and guardians... but as the IIHS uncovered, the majority of vehicles used LATCH systems that were difficult or confusing to set up.
In a second round of testing one year later, however, the IIHS has found a dramatic improvement across the board.
"Frustrating child seat installations have become a familiar rite of parenthood," said Jessica Jermakian, senior research engineer for IIHS. "Unfortunately, these frustrations lead to mistakes that can have real consequences in the event of a crash. We're pleased to see automakers taking this issue seriously and making improvements in response to our ratings."
The 2016 Toyota Prius has surged forward in the ratings most of all. Going from Marginal in 2015, the new Toyota Prius was carefully redesigned to earn the highest possible designation of Good+.
