Driverless Cars? Not as far away from reality as you'd think. The Toyota Research Institute has released a video demonstrating how the technology to allow cars to drive themselves will appear in their cars, and how drivers will interact with and benefit from the technology. The video demonstrates two different modes. Guardian, where the driver operates the car and the system only takes control if demanded by the situation; and Chauffeur, where the autonomous vehicle platform is in control from the start. Chauffeur may be the future for driverless cars, but first we have to get comfortable with allowing them to drive, hence the need for Guardian mode.
As you can see, fully automated driverless cars won't be replacing us anytime soon. The interim stage is one where the technology makes regular operation of vehicles much safer, as the technology that will eventually drive itself is there to help us drive safer in the present. This is but a sliver of the level of safety consciousness that goes into making every new Toyota vehicle!
